Common Types of Planned Gifts: brief descriptions provided below

Your professional advisor will explore making gifts to RMHC-NM that create tax benefits. Laws change and RMHC-NM shall not be held responsible for planned gift decisions based solely on the information provided on this website. There is an established gift acceptance policy that dictates all RMHC-NM’s decisions to accept. Gifts are approved as inquiries are received based on specifics. The only Pre-Approved Gifts are cash.

 

Will or Bequest Gifts

Leave a Legacy by adding a couple lines to your Will or Bequest (sample language below). A percentage of your remainder estate or a designated estate gift can enhance the lives of our families for some time to come. Your bequest to RMHC-NM is exempt from estate taxes.

This is the simplest type of planned gift and one of the easiest to implement.

Sample language for a Bequest, Will or Living Trust:
"I give, devise and bequeath to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of New Mexico,
Tax #85-0283204, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 87106 [either $_____and/or the sum of ______% of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate, both real and personal] for the charitable purposes of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of New Mexico [if there is a designated program insert its name here]."



Retained Life Estate

RMHC-NM accepts your gift of property – either a personal residence or farm – and you retain the right to use the property for you and your spouse’s lifetime.

Need -You wish to leave your house or farm to RMHC-NM at death, but would like a current tax benefit.

 

Solution - You deed your house or farm to RMHC-NM but keep the right to use the residence for your remaining family lifetime.

Benefits
• tax deduction – you receive a current federal income tax deduction for the remainder value of the home or farm.
• preserves lifetime use – donor and spouse are able to reside in home or farm while alive.

You have enough liquid assets available for living expenses and desire a current income tax deduction.

 

Retirement Plans

Need- You make philanthropic gifts to RMHC-NM and want to take advantage of generous tax incentives currently provided by Congress.

Solution-You establish gift by designating RMHC-NM as plan beneficiary with your plan administrator.

Benefits
• gift to RMHC-NM – charity receives remaining plan balance as a gift.
• financial security – you and your loved ones receive an income, which can be fixed or variable.
• tax incentive – amount left from your retirement plans for charitable use are deductible from your estate as charitable gifts

By designating RMHC-NM as your beneficiary, you can arrange an eventual charitable gift of all, or a portion of the assets in one or more retirement accounts, while using proceeds from the retirement plan to help support your family for a period of time.

Taxation of Payouts: Qualified retirement plans traditionally featured income tax benefits at the time contributions are made to the plan. Amounts can build tax free for future enjoyment and are not subject to taxation until the owner withdraws the funds.

Timing: RMHC-NM receives remainder of assets at the death of the donor or at some other agreed upon time.



planned2Charitable Remainder Trust

You set up a Trust for your cash or property, the Trust makes payments to you and your /spouse during your lifetimes or a set term of years and then distributes the rest to RMHC-NM.

Need -you want to turn appreciated property that produces little or no income into a productive asset without paying capital gains tax on the sale of the property.

Solution- you contribute the appreciated property to a charitable remainder trust that will sell the property tax-free and then make payments for your life or a term of years.

The Benefits
• bypass gain – trust sells property tax-free
• increased Income – trust pays a percentage of its value to the trust beneficiary
• charitable tax deduction – donor receives a current federal income tax deduction

This is great if you have cash or appreciated property with a value of at least $100,000 and want increase your income.



Charitable Lead Trust

Your trust receives your cash or property and makes payments to RMHC-NM for a specified period. At the end of the period, the trust distributes your property to your specified beneficiary, usually family.

Need - you want to give property to your family and pay as little gift or estate tax as possible.

Solution - you contribute property to your trust that will make distributions to RMHC-NM for a specified term and ultimately distribute the property to your designated family.

Benefits
• pass appreciation to family – your property plus growth passes to your family with no additional taxes
• gift or estate tax deduction – you receive a current federal gift or estate tax deduction for the present value of the payments that will go to RMHC-NM.

When you want to pass on specific property that is expected to grow substantially to your family at lower gift or estate tax cost. A lead trust is ideal for persons with very large estates and families with no housing needs.

Life Insurance

If you have a paid-up life insurance policy which you no longer need, you can name RMHC-NM as the beneficiary and claim a charitable tax deduction for your generous gift.



POD Accounts

You can assign the funds remaining in a bank account to RMHC-NM, ensuring that the funds come straight to us without going through probate.
